Case Study:

Building a Green Hydrogen Brand from Startup to Media Darling and FOAK Unicorn

The Challenge

In preparation for a record-breaking Series B fundraise in 2022, Electric Hydrogen required a partner who was knowledgeable about the burgeoning hydrogen industry and could capitalize on media relations and strategy to break the news.

Electric Hydrogen already had promising technology and the support of notable investors like Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Energy Impact Partners to revolutionize green hydrogen production. The company needed guidance on how to build a brand that matched its market-leading position and positioned its leadership as thought leaders in the nascent U.S. hydrogen industry.

The Solution

The Redwood team’s experience in alternative energy sources and familiarity with the green shoots of the U.S. hydrogen industry made an instant connection with the team at Electric Hydrogen. We started with foundational brand-building and messaging work, homed in on the company’s key differentiators, and initiated proactive and reactive media outreach.

We tapped into our media networks to establish CEO Raffi Garabedian and other members of the leadership team as go-to expert sources for unpacking the complexities of hydrogen technologies, economics and policies. We maximized the visibility of its Series B announcement and multiple other milestones, including its $380 million Series C raise that earned the company a $1 billion valuation and made it the first hydrogen unicorn.

Over almost three years, Redwood’s guidance on messaging and media strategy, along with strategic deployment of media and analyst relations, helped maintain Electric Hydrogen’s status as the standard-setter for a large and diverse cohort of green hydrogen startups and innovators around the world.
